btw just saw a percy jackson and the olympians: the lightening thief advertisement on my blog. foreshadowing?
so i think i actually learned something in my intro to western civ. class. i know right? learning? at a university? that class is just like a boring gathering of random history i know, or won't need to know. it's so boring. when are professors going to learn that it is counterproductive to make kids fall asleep in their class? i would compare it to a club that dresses up and analizes things like checkers and the colors of things.
my professor's point was this. lights have made us lazy.
having lights in the library, for example, you can work until midnight, when it closes. you could stay up all night writing a paper because of lights. you don't necessarily have to do it in daylight, like people used to. my professor said because of electricity people take advantage of this. why do it now in the daytime, when i could just stay up all night working on it? lights have led to procrastination and laziness. i can do it later. you can put it off because you can illuminate a room and see what you are doing. what a crazy thing to think about.
i heard this during class and was thought to myself, "woah, i've never thought of this in that way. i do put things off because i have the ability to work through the night. man, i'm glad i didn't live during that time, and had a project due."
so i put down my sudoku and payed attention the rest of class

hmm interesting. I like when teachers actually relate what they are talking about to relevant things in our lives. Good stuff
ReplyDeleteim not sure i agree with your professor...maybe it has led us to change our sleep patterns or work times, but i dont think it has made us procrastinate. We still do the work, just at different times, because now we can do them at times more convenient to ourselves....this could make us MORE productive because we can do other productive things during the day and certain things when its dark
