These are the actual questions and my comments. Any other comments in parentheses. Enjoy
1. Do you believe there is a need for increase movie viewing services in the Ames/ISU Community?
Yes
No
(nobody came to the varsity!)

2. GSB has allocated nearly $320,000 thus far for first year programming expenses and renovation costs for the Varsity Theater. Do you support the use of student activity fee money for this purchase?
YesNo
I don't think the "varsity task force" really knows how much this will cost. The varsity has many repairs and extra costs the "task force" is unaware of. (plus there's a lot of mice everywhere) 3. To attain a break-even level of revenue the theater must operate at approximately 50% capacity per each of the fourteen (14) showings per week. Projected attendance is currently at 33% capacity, resulting in an annual deficit of $60,000.00.In light of this information do you support the use of student fee money to acquire and operate the Varsity Theater? Yes No How is it possible for Cyclone Cinema to project 1600 per week attendance, while The Varsity was around 100 per week? (seriously the varsity was occupied more by its employees)(and mice)4. Do you support the reduction in Regular Allocation funding from other student organizations in order to fund any deficit accrued by the Varsity Theater project? Yes No Other student groups shouldn't be punished for another poorly planned student project. (we took all your money and flushed it down a toilet, sorry chess club) 5. Have you attended one of the following activities on Campus more than once? Select all that apply. Free Friday Flicks SUB Films (Student Union Board) |
6. Would you be willing to pay $1 dollar for admission to programing at the Varsity Theater and for SUB Films events scheduled to be held in the Varsity Theater?
No
7. Comments
I do not support my tuition money to go into this renovation. The projections for Cyclone Cinema are way off compared to the reality of what The Varsity did. The Varsity is stripped off everything and needs more work than just throwing seats and projectors in there. It was cheaper to close down the Varsity and pay the rent than to try and keep it open. Cyclone Cinema will continue to see a loss for all the years it remains open. Students didn't want to see movies then and now they are almost being forced to see them since their tuition is paying for it. Cyclone Cinema is not a fully planned out idea. Movie companies are not going to rent films to a student run theater which has no idea how it's supposed to be run. The theater is not going to just work by itself. Cyclone Cinema will continue to lose revenue until the student body realizes its failure and closes it like the Varsity. Hopefully, a generous donor would cover these costs and not let the students suffer. I would probably attend this theater, but I would be very bitter I would have to pay for it. 'Those who do not learn from history are forced to repeat it.’
(take that varsity task force!)

this is good stuff dude. I decided to just answer the questions all no and not comment. They aren't worth my time haha. They can find out for themselves that they will suffer miserably.
ReplyDeletetotally disagree!!! the varsity was a great asset to ames's artistic side, and having a theater on campus is extremely beneficial for student life, especially underclassmen with no car and no way of getting to any other theater (trust me, i know. In IC, i cant see movies.) You make very good points about the financial failures of the Varsity, but there are ways to solve that. First off, new ownership could help break some barriers that cinemark upheld. For example, different movie selection could be a huge factor. I loved the artistic movies, but the new owners could try to pick movies that will be specifically targeting the college student age group. Even older movies such as the Hangover for a dollar entry could draw a decent crowd if marketed. Basically, with consistent promotion on campus and new movie selection, i think the Cyclone Cinema is a great idea to boost student life and the movies in ames. Don't be so quick to rule it out
ReplyDeletebut Isaac this is drew and I's tuition money going towards building this theater that is expected to lose money. We could be using this money for more useful things such as research, keeping teachers from being cut, improving classrooms such as curtiss. I think it's a stupid idea.
ReplyDeletewow... wow. its projected to lose $300,000 and i'll be financing that
ReplyDeleteyes isaac art films are nice. but who went to them!!! don't be the same uninformed student who thinks this is a good idea. isaac you worked there and knew it didn't run well as an "art house" students didn't go to the varsity either. it was old people
when the average age of isu students reaches 60, then the varsity will bring in the dough! And they will have to sell prune juice and dried fruit to sell any concessions
